FRIAR GATE STUDIOS PROVIDE UNIQUE WORK EXPERIENCE
A group of local GSCE students have managed to pack a whole host of careers experience into just one week, thanks to the vast range of creative talent housed at the city’s Friar Gate Studios.
Dominic Watts and Andrew Bould from Littleover Community School aged 15 & 16 spent a week learning all the tricks of the trade from the tenants at the Studios on Ford Street, who all work within the creative sector.
Boxframe were on hand to give the students a crash course in animation, whilst David Gordon showed them the ropes with product design. Word of Mouth Creative gave the duo a lesson in radio and audio production and Haluk Gurer Design Consultant and Warm and Fuzzy Ltd demonstrated the art of graphic design.
A work placement is an opportunity for 15 and 16 year olds in years 10 and 11 to spend a period of time outside the classroom, learning about a particular job or area of work. During the placement, students get a chance to develop workplace skills and find out what employers look for when they're hiring someone to fill a job vacancy.
The aim is to help students interact better with other people in further or higher education, as well as in their future career.
Commenting on the work experience programme, Andleeb Bhatti, centre manager at Friar Gate Studios said:
“When we heard that these local students were looking for work experience in the creative industries, we were delighted to offer them the chance to work with us and our tenants.
“Rather than just have the students observing what one company does for a week, we wanted to give them a real taste of what goes on at the Studios and give them a a more varied experience to take away with them.
“Friar Gate Studios is a creative environment, so we were excited to see what ideas the students can come up with and they have been great to work with, added Andleeb.
